Who's Basic

Brand Collaboration

Blink-182 is a pop/punk band that came to fame at the turn of the century. They pair well with a work-wear brand such as Dickies in the contemporary lens. Dickies has already dipped their toe into alternative culture, lending their name to the world of skateboarding. In the modern era, there has been a resurgence of popular alternative fashion trends from the late 90s, such as loose-fitting cargo/painter’s pants and carpenter’s jeans. This provides the perfect opportunity to cater to the band’s expansive fanbase while simultaneously catering to a current fashion trend.

The visual expression of both of these brand identities is surprisingly similar. Grungy, gritty, baggy, and tough are just a few words that can be used in both settings without anyone batting an eye. Leaning into that visual identity while implementing elements specific to both, such as the bright florescent colors popular with the band and the skateboarding culture that Dickies supports, creates a very cohesive collaboration.

Titling the work was a fun play on identity as well. Dickies slogan, "We're Basic," is in reference to the simple but quality approach to durable clothing. However, Blink-182, and pop-punk music in general, is highly expressive and individualistic. Taking a rebellious visual approach by crossing out the first part of the slogan and replacing it with the targeted rhetorical question "Who's Basic?" shows what the point of this collaboration is perfectly.
